ChicagoSymbols was created using Fontographer and FONTastic, both products of Altsys Corporation. This documentation accompanies version 3 of the font.
DESCRIPTION
The ChicagoSymbols font (hereafter "CS") is a "LaserWriter" font containing a few useful symbols. It derives its name from Apple Computer's Chicago font, and 4 commonly used symbols which that font contains. Originally, the CS font contained only these four symbols, but a few other useful characters have been added.
Characters Included.

USING THE CHICAGOSYMBOLS FONT
To use CS, simply drag the file named "ChicaSym" into your system folder. Do not change the name of this file. Then use Apple's Font/DA Mover (version 3.2 or later only!) or a similar utility to install the CS screen fonts into your system file (these fonts are in the file named "Chicago Symbols.bmap" (or already conveniently installed in the system file, if you obtained this font with DiskTop)).
You may then choose CS, just as you would choose Times, Helvetica, or any other font, from within your applications.
You may notice that only 9, 12, 18 and 24 point versions of the CS screen font are supplied. You may use other sizes of the font if you desire. Since CS is a true PostScript font, it scales quite nicely to any size.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
CS has a font family ID of 132. This ID may be renumbered if you know what you are doing. Changing the name of the font is a much more difficult task, and should not be attempted unless you simply like to experiment with things. Therefore, do not lightly change the name of the file "ChicaSym" nor change the screen font's name of "ChicagoSymbols".
The four characters based upon the Chicago special characters (command, check, diamond, apple) appear at the locations cited above, and also appear "where they belong" from control-q to control-t ($11 to $14).
MODIFICATION HISTORY
V1: included just the four "peculiar" Chicago font symbols.
V1.5: added arrows.
V2: added boxes, moved initials from a hidden position to a usable one. "Fattened" the command symbol. A slight change was made in the font's ascent/descent ratio, so that CS would look stunning when used with Times Roman.
V3: (this one!) was created with an updated version of Fontographer. Therefore, certain anomalies of fractional font spacing have been corrected. Bit map (screen) fonts in 9 and 18 point are added to the original 12 and 24 point versions.
COPYRIGHT AND DISTRIBUTION INFORMATION
ChicagoSymbols and ChicagoSymbolsBold are copyright 1987 by Bradley Poulson. All rights reserved.
This font is "shareware", a method of distributing copyrighted works. It is not public domain.
CS and CSB work fine on my computer system. They may not on yours. No warrantees are implied, and CS/CSB may not be suitable for any of your purposes.
As author of the fonts, I choose to place limits on their distribution. But as I'm a generous person, these limits are quite fair (I can even be flexible).
The possessor of CS/CSB is granted permission to use the fonts on a single printer for a period of one month. At the end of the month, the possessor must either register as a purchaser of the fonts (as discussed below), or must cease using the fonts.
Possessors of CS/CSB may provide copies of these fonts, along with all related files, to any user willing to accept the terms of this agreement. These font may be distributed either by floppy disk (or similar magnetic medium) or by electronic means (such as via modem). CS/CSB may not be sold. Fees can be charged in association with HvF, however, such as by users' groups for duplicating fees, commercial services for downloading time, etc.
Permission has been granted to CE Software to include CS/CSB with their wonderful desk accessory "DiskTop".
If a user chooses to keep and use CS/CSB for more than one month, a fee of $10 for the font is due me (at the address below). This fee entitles the registrant to use CS/CSB as he or she sees fit, so long as it is not used on more than one printer at any given time. This registration fee can be waived if CS/CSB is simply maintained on a disk (or other medium) for archival or redistribution purposes (i.e., a users' group librarian doesn't necessarily have to pay the fee, nor would a telecommunication service such as CompuServe).
If you're interested in tremendous bargain, you can choose to pay a $20 fee. In return you become a "Brad's Fonts Multiply Registered Individual". As a BFMRI, you will receive from me at least two floppy disks (800K) with latest versions of a number of my fonts, with licenses to use all of these fonts. Some of my fonts are Neshota (sometimes acclaimed as "the best ever font for the Apple ImageWriter, bar none"), Madison (an all capitals font), Agua Mundo (a relaxed, fun font), HelveticaFractions (a LaserWriter font with single keystroke, reduced fractions), and whatever else I have at hand (like maybe a nifty LaserWriter font of Nordic runes (if I ever get the screen font done...)).
If you received CS along with DiskTop, consider it a freebie. You needn't register the font, and may use it as much or as long as you like.
Any questions or payments (U.S. checks or equivalent only, please) can be directed to me at the address below. I'm also fairly readily available on CompuServe, ID 76074,1655. When registering, please include your name and address, and please tell me where you obtained ChicagoSymbols. Thanks!
